Reality Check · Privacy and what you give away
How much of yourself should you post to sound authentic?
Less than the word suggests. Honest does not mean unprotected. Keep your location, your school schedule, private conflicts and anything you are still in the middle of off the feed. Post the work, and the question you actually want answered. A detail cannot be un-posted, and attention does not pay for what giving it away costs.
What the book says
Word for word from printed page 45. Nothing is cut, and this is the only part of the page written by the author.
Reality Check
Do not trade privacy for attention. Avoid posting your location, school schedule, private conflicts, or vulnerable information you may regret. Honest does not mean unprotected.
Why this happens
Platforms reward the most exposing version of a post, so the feedback you get pushes in one direction only. Nothing pushes back.
A conflict posted while it is still happening involves someone who did not agree to be posted about, and the version written mid-argument is the one that stays up.
What to do instead
Choose your three signal words and check the post against them before it goes out.
Share one 30-second idea and ask one clear question. Write down what comes back — that is the part worth having.
Who to talk to
Your safe witness, before posting anything that is about another person as well as you.
If none of those is available, an adult here also counts:
- A parent or guardian
- A teacher, or a school counselor
- A coach or club leader
- A librarian
- A youth worker
- A brother or sister over 18
Going around the gate is the failure, not the clever move. And if the adult you ask says no, that is information about timing — not about you. There is more on how that conversation tends to go on Race Control, for parents.
No secrecy around money, meetings, identity documents, or pressure. A legitimate opportunity can survive an adult review and a night of sleep.
